Neighbors Helping Neighbors

The Beacon of Hope continues in its mission to assist residents of Pine Island – Bokeelia, St. James City and Matlacha. Its work, and the need of our residents, have been recognized time and again by generous individual donors as well as non-profits and the State of Florida. The Beacon received nearly $500,000 from individual donors in the immediate aftermath of Ian. That money has been used, and is being used, to aid residents’ recovery from Ian. Foundations and organizations like The Rotary Club of Ft. Myers, the Area Agency Aging of Southwest Florida, the First Horizon Foundation, the American Red Cross and SBP have provided funds that have allowed us to replace residents appliances and provide mold remediation among other things. Of course, throughout this the United Way has provided funds and donations in kind to assist us in supporting residents.

Most recently, learning of our careful stewardship of funds, Volunteer Florida awarded the Beacon $500,000 to assist businesses and residents in further recovery. We anticipate partnering with professional Disaster Case Managers including Compass 82, the Methodist Disaster Relief program and others to distribute funds. We are also setting up a task force to focus on the needs of businesses and determine the best way to help them recover and continue to provide employment for Pine Island residents. More information on the programs will be forth coming as procedures are developed.

Feeding Those In Need

“Beacon Bites” is a program developed to combat issues facing Pine Island seniors and the disabled.  It is a home-delivered meal program that was created to deliver meals to people unable to purchase or prepare their own meals. Research shows that home-delivered meal programs significantly improve diet quality, increase nutrient intakes, reduce food insecurity and improve quality-of-life among the recipients.

Meals are made by Phuzzys Crab Shack, Burnt Store Tavern, Fine Swine, and Salty Girls.
